Contaminated Waste (Class I, Class II, Class III)

Contaminated waste disposal at Meru is managed in line with the DWER licensing and regulatory requirements. Before any waste can be received at the landfill, it must be assessed and classified.

The price for disposing contaminated waste will be confirmed upon application assessment.

A waste disposal application form must be completed and submitted to the City with relevant supporting documents for assessment.

If you have all the supporting documents and would like to apply for a contaminated waste approval, please complete the commercial contaminated waste application form

Once an application has been assessed as acceptable for disposal, a waste approval and booking number will be issued.

Safety Measures at Meru Waste Disposal Facility

To keep everyone safe and make your visits smoother, we’re introducing some new safety steps for commercial users at the Meru Waste Disposal Facility. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Stay Connected

When you arrive:

  • Come equipped with a 2-way radio (channel 16)
  • Let us know which area you’re heading to - commercial stockpiles/Cell 5 (follow the 2-way sign prompts)
  • Tell us which bay you’ll be using when entering Cell 5 (follow the 2-way sign prompts)

2. Dress for Safety

If you need to get out of your vehicle at the Tipping Face (Cells 1-5) or the Commercial Stockpile, please wear:

  • A hi-vis vest
  • Enclosed shoes

If you don’t have the required gear and are in a light vehicle, we’ll guide you to the Meru Resource Recovery Station for waste disposal.

FAQs 

Why are these new site entry requirements necessary?

The City has a duty of care for all people entering its site under the WHS Act (2020). These measures are necessary due to the potential interaction between operational vehicles and commercial users at these locations (tipping face Cell 5 and commercial stockpiles). The City recommends all commercial users to be alert and follow directions.  

What are the new requirements?

Call up on UHF Channel 16 when entering Cell 5 and Commerical Stockpiles to make your presence known.

What if I do not have a 2-way radio?

AThe City is taking an educational/awareness approach from the 1 December 2024 to 31 December 2024. During that time, you will still be able to access the areas, and the weighbridge will assist in making the calls for you. However, after the 31 December, a full implementation approach will apply. This means that you will either be asked to leave site, be redirected to the Resource Recovery Station (if your vehicle can be accommodated) or be escorted to your tipping location. Please be aware that escorting services may take up to 20 minutes and may not always be available.

What if I do not have hi-vis vest nor closed-in shoes?

The City is taking an educational/awareness approach from the 1 December 2024 to 31 December 2024. If you are not exiting your vehicle at these locations, you will not require the hi-vis vest or the enclosed shoes.

However, if you are required to exit your vehicle to dispose of the waste and do not have the appropriate PPE, you may be required to leave site or be redirected to the Resource Recovery Station (if your vehicle can be accommodated).  

 

Which UHF Channel do I use?

UHF Channel 16.

When do I call upon the 2-way?

UHF Call Up Channel 16 signs have been placed on site that cue you to call in your location as you drive to the commercial stockpiles or to Cell 5. Tipping bay numbers have been placed in Cell 5. Ensure you call up which bay you will be using before you enter. Listen out for any response from operational vehicles in the area.

 

When do these requirements come into effect?

From1st December 2024 – Awareness and educational.

1 January 2025 onwards – full implementation  

 

What happens if my vehicle is too big to go to the Resource Recovery Station?

You will be escorted by a Cleanaway staff member. Please be aware that this service may require you to wait 20 minutes or more and may not always be available.
