Net zero carbon for 91ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø operations by 2030 remains on track with projects to reduce emissions and generate green energy featuring in the 2024/25 Budget.
91ÊÓƵAPP¹ÙÍø Mayor Jerry Cune said the Budget demonstrates the City’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
“The transition to renewables and reducing emissions from waste are top priorities in City’s Achieving Net Zero Corporate Climate Change Mitigation Plan with high impact projects valued at nearly $5 million being delivered this year will get us closer to our target of net zero by 2023,” he said.
“The design and delivery of gas flaring at the Meru Waste Management Facility and the installation of a microgrid at the Geraldton Airport will play a significant role in our journey towards net zero.
“Meru produces more than 80% of the City’s operational carbon emissions. Collecting the harmful methane gas produced by waste decomposing in the landfill and flaring it will reduce Meru’s estimated greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50%. That is huge!
“Whereas the installation of an energy microgrid at the Airport will not only reduce the City’s carbon footprint it will generate renewable energy and enable the Airport, City Depot and the SES Centre to operate independently from mains power in an emergency,” Mayor Clune added.
Other projects to reduce emissions include the replacement of the four aged lighting towers at the Recreation Grounds with new LEDs which will reduce energy consumption by half and the replacement of a petrol-powered light fleet vehicle with a hybrid sedan.
